Is pest control right for your Otago property?

Whether it is a minor nuisance or more widespread activity, we look at the pest, affected areas and property conditions before treatment. We work with homeowners and businesses throughout the region. If spiders, flies or wasps are becoming more noticeable as the weather warms, tell us where you are seeing them.

Different pests need different treatment

Spider control

Spiders can be a problem inside the property, around the outside of the building, or both. Tell us where you are seeing them and where webs keep appearing, such as window frames, eaves, garages or particular rooms.

We check the affected areas before deciding what needs treatment. A few spiders outside and repeated activity indoors are different jobs, so it helps to know where the problem is worst.

Fly control

If flies are gathering around windows, entrances or certain rooms, tell us where and when you notice them. Activity in a kitchen or food area is useful to mention too.

We look at where flies are getting in or gathering before recommending treatment. If there is an obvious source attracting them, dealing with that source may also be part of keeping the problem under control.

Rat and mouse control

A sighting, droppings, chewed packaging or noises in a wall or roof space can help us understand where rats or mice may be active. Let us know what you have found and where, even if you have not seen the animal itself.

We assess the affected areas and property conditions before recommending treatment. Food sources and possible entry points matter. If damaged parts of the building need repairing or gaps need proofing, that work is separate from pest treatment.

Wasp nest removal

If you have found a wasp nest, tell us where it is and whether it is easy to access. You may notice wasps travelling to and from the same spot even when the nest is hard to see. You do not need to go near it to take a photo; a description of the location is enough.

We check the nest location and access before choosing a treatment or removal method. Let us know if the area is used regularly by children, guests or pets, or if the nest is near an entrance or outdoor seating area.

Flea treatment

Fleas are often noticed in rooms where pets spend time, including carpeted areas and soft furnishings. Tell us which rooms are affected, whether pets use them and when you first noticed the problem.

Treating the property and treating a pet are separate jobs. We can explain what needs to be prepared before work starts and when people and pets can use the treated areas again.

Bed bug treatment

Bed bugs can hide around mattresses, bed frames, headboards and nearby furniture. If you have found an insect, shed skins or small dark marks near a bed, send a clear photo if you can. Bites alone may not tell you what pest is present.

Tell us which bedrooms are affected and whether the property is a home, rental or accommodation business. We explain any preparation, re-entry instructions and whether a follow-up visit may be needed after assessing the job.

Ant control

An ant trail can show where insects are moving, but it may not show where they are coming from. Tell us where you have seen them, whether they are inside or outside, and if they keep returning to the same area.

We look at the affected area and possible entry points before deciding what to treat. A photo of the ants and their trail can help us assess the problem before visiting.

Carpet beetle control

Carpet beetle larvae can damage wool, carpets and other natural fibres. If you have found small insects, larvae or unexplained damage to a rug, carpet edge, clothing or upholstery, tell us where you found it.

We check what is present and which materials are affected before recommending treatment. A close photo of the insect and a wider photo of the damaged area are useful if you can take them.

Silverfish control

Silverfish are small, fast-moving insects that may turn up in bathrooms, cupboards and storage areas. Let us know which rooms you have seen them in and whether they are appearing repeatedly.

We check the affected spaces and what may be allowing the insects to persist before deciding which areas need treatment. If you are unsure whether the insect is a silverfish, send a photo rather than guessing.

Borer treatment

Small holes in timber and fine dust beneath them can be signs of borer. Tell us which timber is affected, whether it is part of the building or a piece of furniture, and whether you have noticed fresh dust or adult beetles.

We need to see the affected timber before recommending a treatment. Existing holes do not always show whether borer is still active, and repairs to damaged timber are separate from pest treatment.

Treatment, safety and follow-up

Our technicians have completed the Urban Pest Management Course and are certified approved handlers for the pest control products we use. We explain the selected treatment and any preparation or re-entry instructions before work starts.

Bed bugs, ants and some other pests may need a follow-up treatment. We will tell you if a return visit is needed after assessing the pest and the extent of activity.

When are pests most active in Central Otago?

Central Otago’s seasons are quite different. Summers can be hot and dry around Cromwell and Alexandra, while winter brings regular frosts. Conditions vary across the wider area, including Queenstown and Wanaka, so the pests you notice will depend on the property as well as the time of year.

Insects often become more noticeable in spring and early summer. Wasp queens begin new nests in spring, and the number of workers grows through summer. If you notice a nest near an entrance, deck or area people use regularly, tell us where it is. We can assess the location without asking you to go near it.

By late summer and autumn, an established wasp nest may be much busier. Winter brings a different problem: rats and mice are more likely to get into buildings. Droppings, scratching in a wall or roof space, or activity around stored food are all useful details to pass on, even if you have not seen the animal.

There is no set month when every Central Otago property needs pest treatment. A wasp nest outside a Cromwell home, signs of rodents in a Queenstown rental and insects in a Wanaka accommodation property need different checks. Tell us what you have seen, where it is active and when you first noticed it. We will assess the pest and explain the treatment and any preparation needed.
